There is something incredibly special about a woodland wedding. Surrounded by towering trees, dappled sunlight and the sounds of nature, it creates an atmosphere that feels completely removed from everyday life. Ema and Dave’s Hazlewood Castle Woodland Wedding was exactly that. A wonderfully relaxed, emotional and incredibly fun celebration hidden within the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

I’ve photographed weddings at Hazlewood Castle before, so I already knew how much the venue has to offer. The Woodland Wedding experience, however, feels completely different. Instead of spending the day around the Castle, you follow a tree-lined path into the woods. Gradually, a secluded woodland venue reveals itself beneath the canopy. It feels intimate, rustic and almost festival-like, while still having all the character and quality you would expect from a wedding at Hazlewood Castle.

For Ema and Dave, it was the perfect setting.

From the morning preparations and their beautiful outdoor ceremony to a tipi wedding breakfast and an evening filled with dancing, laughter and plenty of unforgettable moments. This was one of those weddings where there was always something happening.

And as a wedding photographer, that’s exactly the kind of day I love to document.

A Summer Wedding at Hazlewood Castle

Hazlewood Castle is surrounded by approximately 77 acres of woodland and countryside, creating an incredible backdrop for weddings throughout the year.

The Woodland Wedding venue sits tucked away among the trees, giving couples the feeling of having escaped into their own private corner of the Yorkshire countryside.

As you make your way towards the venue, the surroundings gradually change. The Castle disappears behind you, the trees become denser and strings of lights guide you along the woodland paths.

It immediately creates a sense of anticipation.

Ema and Dave chose a warm, natural colour palette that worked beautifully with the surroundings. Dave and his groomsmen wore light beige suits with brown details, complementing the earthy tones of the woodland perfectly.

The whole wedding had a wonderfully relaxed feel from the very beginning.

One of my favourite photographs from the morning is a completely spontaneous moment of Dave lifting one of the little boys into the air while the groomsmen sit watching and laughing.

These are exactly the moments I always look for at weddings.

The beautifully styled portraits are important, of course, but the photographs that often become most meaningful are the moments nobody planned.

Wedding Morning Preparations at Hazlewood Castle

While guests began arriving and the woodland venue was being prepared, Ema spent the morning getting ready surrounded by the people closest to her.

Someone searching for something that disappeared five minutes earlier.

And then suddenly, after months or even years of planning, everything becomes real.

Ema’s wedding dress looked beautiful hanging in the soft window light before she put it on. Later, surrounded by her bridal party, the atmosphere shifted from preparations to excitement as everyone realised it was almost time to leave for the ceremony.

One of my favourite images from this part of the day is Ema looking into the mirror, bouquet in hand, with her bridal party reflected behind her.

It is a simple moment, but one that captures so much of the anticipation before a wedding ceremony.

While Ema was getting ready in the Castle, Dave spent the morning with his closest friends and family in the woodland venue. There was plenty of laughter, a few nerves and some brilliant moments with the children before everyone made their way to the ceremony.

An Outdoor Woodland Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony is where a Hazlewood Castle Woodland Wedding really comes into its own.

Hidden among the trees, the woodland ceremony area feels wonderfully secluded. Guests sit beneath the canopy while the ceremony takes place surrounded by nature.

For a photographer, the light here can be incredible.

Sunlight filters through the leaves, creating constantly changing pockets of light and shadow. Rather than fighting against this, I love using it as part of the photography.

As Ema made her way along the woodland path towards the ceremony with her bridal party, the sunlight was breaking beautifully through the trees.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

Walking towards Dave.

The ceremony itself was relaxed, emotional and full of character. Surrounded by their family and friends, Ema and Dave exchanged rings and finally became husband and wife.

And then came one of my favourite moments to photograph at any wedding.

The confetti.

As they walked back through their guests, colourful confetti filled the air around them. These photographs are always full of movement and genuine expressions because, for those few seconds, absolutely anything can happen.

The result is one of those wonderful wedding moments that simply cannot be recreated.

Why Woodland Weddings Are Incredible to Photograph

From a photography perspective, woodland weddings offer something very different from traditional wedding venues.

Everywhere you look, there are layers.

Trees create natural frames. Pathways lead your eye through photographs. Sunlight moves constantly through the canopy. Strings of lights disappear into the distance.

What I particularly loved about Ema and Dave’s wedding was how naturally everything flowed.

There were beautiful details, of course.

The woodland-inspired setting.

The wedding rings photographed among natural textures.

The warm floral tones of the wedding cake.

The fairy lights inside the tipi.

But the personality of the day came from the people.

Children running around.

Friends laughing together.

Family members catching up.

Unexpected moments happening everywhere.

There was even plenty of entertainment for the guests, which created some brilliant opportunities for candid photography throughout the day.

As daylight faded through the trees, the atmosphere changed completely.

The fairy lights became brighter.

The dance floor filled.

And the party properly began.

Ema and Dave’s evening celebration was full of energy.

There was dancing, a brilliant photo booth and plenty of guests who were more than happy to give me amazing expresions to photograph.

These are the moments when I tend to get right into the middle of the dance floor.

I don’t want photographs of the party taken from twenty feet away.

I want to feel like I’m part of it.

That means getting close to the action and capturing the expressions, movement and chaos that make every wedding party completely unique.

And this one certainly didn’t disappoint.

The dance floor filled quickly as guests celebrated together, creating an incredible atmosphere that lasted all evening.

Ending the Wedding With a Bang

Then came one of my favourite photographs of the entire wedding.

Outside in the darkness of the woodland, surrounded by their closest friends and family, Ema and Dave celebrated with champagne.

Very enthusiastically.

The result was spectacular.

Champagne flying everywhere.

Guests cheering.

Hands in the air.

Ema and Dave right in the middle of it all.

It was messy, unpredictable and absolutely perfect.

For me, the photograph sums up their wedding beautifully.

A wedding doesn’t need perfect planning or complete control to feel beautiful.

Sometimes the best photographs happen when you simply allow people to enjoy themselves and see what happens.

And Ema and Dave certainly knew how to enjoy their wedding.

What Happens If It Rains at a Hazlewood Castle Woodland Wedding?

One of the biggest questions couples have when considering an outdoor wedding in Yorkshire is understandably:

Hazlewood Castle’s woodland ceremony pagoda shelters the couple and registrars, while additional gazebos give guests protection if needed. The venue also describes options for using the covered barn dance-floor area near the pagoda and creating covered access towards the buffet and bar.

From a photographer’s perspective, however, rain doesn’t mean you won’t have beautiful photographs.

It’s relaxed.
